What is yoga therapy?

More and more people are looking to alternative wellness to find relief from symptoms and more and more Dr.’s and health care providers are recommending yoga to help their clients. The issue is, just recommending “yoga” is too vague. People need the right kind of practices to fit their needs and medical conditions. This is where yoga therapy comes in.

The overseeing body, the International Association of Yoga Therapists defines it as follows:

“Yoga therapy is the process of empowering individuals to progress toward improved health and well-being through the application of the teachings and practices of Yoga.”

Yoga Teacher vs Yoga Therapist

Although Cam & Lauren provide similar services, they have different approaches and credentials to help you meet your goals.

Lauren is an experienced, IAYT-certified yoga therapist.  To clarify, let’s outline the difference between a yoga therapist and a yoga teacher:

yoga teacher is a yoga professional with a minimum 200-hour certification credential focusing on the practices and lineage of yoga to present in a class setting.

yoga therapist has an 800-1000 hour training credential from the IAYT.  A yoga therapist is a specialist with specific training in how to provide yoga practices safely to specific populations in order to help reduce symptoms.

Note: Yoga therapy is not used to diagnose or treat any chronic conditions. Yoga therapy is a supportive practice that helps empower individuals to take their health and wellness into their own hands.  While it presents an excellent skill set to a care team, it is not intended as a substitute for therapy or any other clinical treatment.
For about a year I received yoga therapy with Lauren. Every session with her was educational and valuable to me. She has positively influenced my growth and healing with her knowledge and presence. The theme of our work together has been establishing trust, balancing my energy, and grounding into a spiritual practice that feels safe to me in order to heal from trauma. It was wonderful to have experienced what felt like a complete therapy beginning and ending process. I am forever grateful to have met her.

After many years of chronic lower back issues, I was fortunate to work with Lauren and find relief from pain. Lauren introduced me to simple exercises and meditation techniques that were very easy to incorporate into my everyday life. With these tools I have learned not to push through pain and have resumed many activities that caused days of pain and immobility. Lauren’s patience and guidance has been a gift and has provided me with a new outlook on my physical capabilities despite my injury.

Lauren has been an amazing asset in helping me through my brain cancer recovery. She offered personalized therapy in my own home and tailored each practice to my daily ups and downs. Lauren has an acute ability to assess the body and understand personalized needs of the individual.
